Mentoring Skills
Objectives
After the programme, participants will be able to:
- understand the nature and requirements of a mentoring relationship
- identify people with whom they would like to establish a mentoring relationship
- establish a mentoring relationship effectively - defining the parameters of their role and contribution
- select appropriate mentoring styles according to the requirements of the individual and the issues they want to address
- support people to reflect on their career aspirations and plan appropriate career development strategies
- use questions to help people review and reflect on issues and to learn from their experiences
- listen deeply to what people are saying in order to establish their resourceful-ness and respond to underlying issues
Process
The programme design has four main elements:
- reflection on your current contribution as a mentor - either on your own or in small-group or paired discussions
- inputs on the mentoring relationship and the requirements for conducting one effectively
- practice in the form of the live' mentoring of another participant on the programme
- planning specific steps you could take to develop your contribution as a mentor after the programme
